A Brief History OF Watson Restaurant
Born in 1872, San Antonio’s Jack Harris opened the Vaudeville Theatre and Saloon at Soledad and West Commerce, hence founding the “Sporting District.” Offering gambling, live theater, and alcohol, this venue became the most frequented hangout in the city. Held there was the first American “Vaudeville Theatre Ambush.
Harris’s longtime Civil War companion Ben Thompson was kicked out of the saloon in 1880, leading to a fatal confrontation in 1882. Angry and dishonest, Thompson shot Harris across the saloon’s swinging doors. Harris’s friends Joe Foster and Billy Simms ran the company following his death. Officially proclaimed as the “Sporting District” in 1889, the San Antonio municipal council became a notorious vice hotspot.
While Harris’s friends were never convicted, John King Fisher and Ben Thompson were killed in the theater in 1884. One of the historical sites, Watson Rooftop, is restoring its vitality and excitement by 2022. Renamed the “Entertainment District,” 1Watson wants to rewrite the historical narrative with vibrant social events honoring San Antonio’s once-great party scene.
